Kathmandu Valley Tour

Seven UNESCO monument zones inside one valley.

About this journey

The Kathmandu Valley holds seven UNESCO-listed monument zones: the durbar squares of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur, the stupas at Boudhanath and Swayambhunath, and the temple complexes at Pashupatinath and Changu Narayan. Most visitors give the city two days and see three of them. Three to four days, with a guide who can read the iconography, is what it actually takes.

Highlights

  • Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur durbar squares
  • Boudhanath at dusk, when the kora fills up
  • Swayambhunath and the valley view from the hilltop
  • Pashupatinath on the Bagmati
  • Changu Narayan, the valley's oldest temple

Permits

  • Monument-zone entry tickets, issued per site on the day

We process these for you. Bring your passport and passport photographs.

Getting there

  • Private vehicle and driver throughout the valley
  • Licensed cultural guide on request — worth it here more than anywhere
  • Reachable by tourist bus or a 25-minute flight from Pokhara
